The Untold Story of Final Fantasy's Iconic Western Box Art

The Untold Story of Final Fantasy's Iconic Western Box Art

In 2001, a striking piece of Yoshitaka Amano artwork graced pharmacy and electronics store shelves across North America, defining the visual identity of "Final Fantasy" for a generation of players. This iconic cover, however, was not part of the original marketing plan.

The tale begins with the U.S. magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). Facing a tight deadline for their cover story on the highly anticipated "Final Fantasy" game, the magazine's art director needed compelling imagery fast. The solution was to directly use a beautiful, ethereal illustration by the series' legendary artist, Yoshitaka Amano, which had been provided by Square's Japanese office for promotional purposes.

The magazine hit newsstands with Amano's art prominently featured. The reaction from the gaming community was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Fans were captivated by the elegant, painterly style, which stood in stark contrast to the more common CGI heroes or action scenes typical of game covers at the time. This enthusiastic reception did not go unnoticed by the game's publisher.

Square Enix, witnessing the powerful fan response to EGM's issue, made a pivotal last-minute decision. They scrapped their planned North American box art and adopted Amano's illustration as the official cover for the game's release. This move cemented a piece of magazine art into gaming history, proving that sometimes, the most enduring icons are born from creative necessity and a keen ear for audience appreciation.
