As the Game Developers Conference (GDC) struggles to maintain its footing in a shifting industry landscape, Gamescom is charging ahead with record-breaking momentum. In a recent interview, Gamescom directors Tim Endres and Stefan Heikhaus shared insights on the event's continued growth, the role of government backing, and the expansion into Latin America.
Ticket sales for the Cologne-based event have surged, with organizers reporting a significant uptick in both consumer and trade attendance. Heikhaus attributed this to a renewed appetite for in-person gatherings and a program that balances blockbuster reveals with indie showcases. "We are seeing a hunger for connection that goes beyond the screen," he said. "People want to touch the hardware, meet the developers, and feel the energy of a live crowd."
Government support has also played a key role. Endres noted that public funding has helped Gamescom scale its infrastructure and attract international partners, especially as other major events scale back. "Having that institutional backing gives us stability that many other shows lack right now," he explained.
The duo also highlighted the evolution of Gamescom Latam, which launched in Brazil earlier this year. While still in its early stages, the Latin American offshoot has already drawn strong local interest. "It is not just a copy of the German event," Heikhaus said. "It is adapting to the culture and the gaming habits of the region. That is what makes it work."
With GDC facing layoffs and attendance dips, Gamescom's upward trajectory suggests a shift in how the industry prioritizes its events. For Endres and Heikhaus, the formula is simple: listen to the community, lean on local partners, and never underestimate the power of a live demo.
