The surprising reason why Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy’s ancient Greece is historically wrong

The upcoming game Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set in ancient Greece, but players should not expect a strict history lesson. According to art director Olivier Cannone, the team deliberately softened some of the harsher realities of the period to make the world more palatable for modern audiences.

"We had to tone down historical reality," Cannone said in a recent interview. He explained that while the game draws heavily on classical Greek architecture, clothing, and daily life, the developers chose to filter out certain brutal aspects. For example, the widespread practice of slavery, the extreme treatment of women, and the graphic nature of public punishments were all dialed back or removed entirely.

Cannone noted that the goal was not to mislead players but to create a space where the emotional story of the Plague Tale series could thrive. The original games were known for their grim medieval setting, but the team felt that replicating the full, unvarnished truth of ancient Greece would have been too distracting. "We wanted the beauty of the marble, the light on the Aegean, and the sense of myth. If we had shown everything exactly as it was, the game would have felt like a documentary, not a narrative adventure," he said.

This decision has sparked debate among fans. Some appreciate the artistic choice, while others argue that the series has always prided itself on gritty authenticity. Cannone stands by the decision, saying that the game still respects the core spirit of the era, even if it takes a more romanticized view. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is expected to release next year, and players will be able to judge for themselves how well this balance works.
