Researchers Are Turning Video Games Into a New Tool to Help Teens Manage Anxiety

With anxiety disorders on the rise among adolescents, researchers are testing a fresh approach: using video games to build mental resilience. The idea is not to distract teens from their worries, but to train the brain's attention system, which often goes haywire when anxiety spikes.

Therapists have long used cognitive behavioral therapy to teach teens how to redirect their focus away from threatening thoughts. But many young people struggle to practice those skills in real time, especially when they are not in a therapist's office. A new wave of research is looking at whether a specially designed game can make that practice feel less like homework and more like play.

The games are built around attention bias modification, a technique that gently nudges players to ignore threatening cues and respond to neutral or positive ones. Over repeated sessions, the hope is that the brain forms new habits, making it easier for teens to shift their attention away from anxious triggers in daily life. Early studies show promise, with some participants reporting lower anxiety scores after a few weeks of play.

What makes this approach appealing is its accessibility. Many teens already spend hours on screens, so a therapeutic game does not require a major lifestyle change. It also offers a low-stigma entry point for those who might avoid traditional talk therapy. Researchers caution that the games are not a standalone cure, but they could become a valuable addition to a broader mental health plan, especially for teens who need extra practice between sessions.

The next step is larger trials to see which game mechanics work best and for which types of anxiety. If the results hold up, video games could shift from being a source of parental concern to a legitimate tool in the mental health toolkit.
