Atari, Iam8bit, Lost in Cult, and Silver Linings Interactive are among the game companies expressing strong dismay at Sony's decision to halt production of physical PlayStation discs. The move signals a major shift in the industry toward digital-only distribution, leaving several developers and publishers worried about the future of physical media.
"We are profoundly disappointed by Sony's decision," said a representative from Iam8bit, a company known for producing special physical editions of games. Lost in Cult, a publisher focused on collector's editions, echoed the sentiment, calling the move a blow to game preservation and consumer choice. Atari also weighed in, noting that physical discs remain vital for regions with poor internet access and for fans who value owning a tangible product.
Silver Linings Interactive highlighted that physical releases often include art books, maps, and other extras that digital versions lack. The companies fear that without disc production, smaller studios will lose a key revenue stream and a way to stand out on store shelves. While Sony has not officially confirmed the end of all disc production, the reports have sparked a broader debate about the industry's reliance on digital downloads and the potential loss of ownership rights for players.
