Game Preservation Leader Says Piracy May Be the Only Option in a Discless Future

A prominent figure in video game preservation has made a stark admission: as the industry moves further away from physical media, piracy might become the only reliable method to keep classic games alive. The preservation advocate stated that major publishers "refuse to offer a meaningful alternative" when it comes to ensuring access to older titles after their online storefronts shut down.

The warning comes as more companies push digital-only consoles and services, leaving entire libraries of games vulnerable to being lost forever. Once a digital store closes, or a server goes offline, players who legally purchased those titles often have no way to re-download them. The preservation leader argued that while piracy is not an ideal solution, it is sometimes the only functional one when corporations abandon their own products.

The future of preservation is, as usual, on the PC. Unlike consoles, PC gaming has a long history of community-driven archiving, emulation, and unofficial patches that keep old software running on modern hardware. However, even on PC, the trend toward always-online requirements and launcher exclusivity creates new barriers. The preservationist noted that without physical discs or offline installers, the only copies that survive may be those that were cracked and shared by users.

This stance is not an endorsement of stealing new releases, but a practical observation about the fragility of digital ownership. When a company decides a game is no longer profitable to host, they can simply delete it from existence. In that scenario, a pirated copy sitting on a hard drive becomes the only remaining evidence that the game ever existed. The preservation community continues to push for legal solutions, such as compulsory licensing or public archives, but until those arrive, the old methods remain the most reliable.
