Legendary game director Shinji Mikami, famed for creating the survival-horror genre with the original Resident Evil and directing its seminal sequel, Resident Evil 4, has announced the first major project from his new independent studio. The studio, named Unbound, is currently in development on a brand-new, AAA original intellectual property for consoles and PC.
Mikami departed from Tango Gameworks, the Bethesda-owned studio he founded over a decade ago, in early 2023. His exit followed the successful launch of the critically acclaimed action-horror title, Hi-Fi Rush. Now, free from corporate ownership, Mikami and his team at Unbound are focusing their efforts entirely on crafting a fresh experience from the ground up.
Details on the new IP remain tightly under wraps, with no specific genre, setting, or release window provided. However, the commitment to a console and PC AAA experience signals a major undertaking. The gaming community is watching with keen interest, eager to see what unique vision and inventive gameplay the veteran director will bring to life outside of the shadow of his iconic past work. This project represents a bold new chapter for one of the industry's most influential creators.
