Inside Skybound’s video game strategy

Skybound Entertainment is making a major push into the video game space, and the company's top executives are finally opening up about the plan. CEO David Alpert and co-chairman Jon Goldman recently sat down to discuss how the studio behind "The Walking Dead" and "Invincible" is reshaping its approach to interactive entertainment.

According to Alpert, the key is not just licensing out properties but building a sustainable internal development pipeline. He emphasized that Skybound wants to be more than a publisher that hands off beloved IPs to outside studios. Instead, the company is focusing on creating games that feel authentic to their source material while also standing on their own as quality experiences. Goldman added that the industry is shifting toward a model where owning your own development tools and talent is critical for long-term survival.

The strategy involves a mix of in-house projects and carefully selected partnerships. Skybound is looking to avoid the common trap of chasing trends or rushing unfinished products to market. Alpert noted that the company is willing to take its time, especially with narrative-driven games that expand their existing universes. Goldman pointed out that the current market is brutal for mid-tier releases, so Skybound is aiming for either high-quality indie-scale projects or larger, more ambitious titles that can compete with the biggest names in gaming.

While specific game announcements remain under wraps, the executives hinted at projects that will leverage their most popular franchises in unexpected ways. The goal, they said, is to make Skybound a name that gamers trust, not just a label on a box.
