A new indie title called Kidbash: Super Legend is turning heads by combining modern 3D modeling software with the visual style of a classic SNES game. The game is built entirely in Blender, but its final rendered look deliberately mimics the aesthetic of 16-bit console classics, specifically the pre-rendered sprite technique made famous by Donkey Kong Country.
That game, released in 1994 by Rare, used Silicon Graphics workstations to render 3D models, then converted them into sprites for the Super Nintendo. The result was a smooth, almost clay-like look that felt revolutionary at the time. Kidbash: Super Legend takes the same approach but uses modern open-source tools. The developer creates full 3D models and animations in Blender, then exports them as carefully processed 2D sprites that retain the original's charm.
The game itself is a fast-paced action platformer. Players control a small character named Kidbash through colorful levels filled with enemies, traps, and secrets. The visual style is deliberately low-resolution, with dithering, limited color palettes, and the slight jitteriness that defined many SNES-era titles. But because the source material is 3D, the animations are smoother and more complex than what traditional pixel art could achieve on the same hardware.
This technique is not entirely new. Several indie games have tried similar approaches, but Kidbash stands out by sticking closely to the specific look of Donkey Kong Country. The developer has shared development logs showing how each sprite is extracted from Blender, reduced in color depth, and given that signature retro feel. The result is a game that looks like it could have been played on a CRT television in the mid-1990s, but with modern design sensibilities.
Kidbash: Super Legend is currently in development with a demo available for testing. The full release is expected later this year. For fans of retro platformers, it offers a fresh take on a classic visual trick.
