Square Enix has officially confirmed a change in the English voice cast for one of gaming's most iconic villains. The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has announced that Sephiroth will be voiced by a new actor in the upcoming third installment of the remake trilogy.
The original English voice for Sephiroth, George Newbern, had voiced the character for over two decades, starting with the 1998 game "Ehrgeiz" and continuing through the "Kingdom Hearts" series and the first two entries of the "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" project. However, the development team has decided to recast the role for the final chapter.
The new actor stepping into the role is Tyler Hoechlin, best known for playing Superman on the television series "Supergirl" and "Superman & Lois." Hoechlin also voiced Sephiroth in the recent mobile game "Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis," which served as a precursor to this full-time casting.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the decision was made to bring a fresh interpretation to the character as the story reaches its climax. The team wanted Sephiroth's performance to reflect the deeper psychological and emotional layers that will be explored in the final game. Hamaguchi stated that Hoechlin's audition captured the cold, calculating menace of Sephiroth while also adding a new sense of vulnerability and obsession.
Fans have had mixed reactions to the news. Some are nostalgic for Newbern's iconic delivery, while others are excited to see how Hoechlin will handle the character's most dramatic moments. The final game, currently referred to as "Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3," is expected to release sometime in the next few years. No specific release date has been announced yet.
