The blackouts are a stark reminder that a fully digital console future would leave gamers powerless when servers go down.

The problem is simple: if you own a disc, you can play offline. If you bought a digital copy, you are at the mercy of a server check. During the recent downtime, many players reported being unable to start single-player titles they had paid for. That is a fundamental failure of ownership. You do not really own a digital game. You own a license that can be revoked or blocked by a network error.
