Nintendo and Atlus actually announce a game (re-)release for November 2026

Microsoft didn't do it. Sony didn't do it. Capcom, EA, and Ubisoft haven't done it either. But Nintendo and Sega-owned Atlus, seemingly unfazed by the massive shadow looming over the end of 2026, stepped up during today's Nintendo Direct showcase to announce a game release for November. Yes, it is a port for the Switch 2, but it still counts.

Metaphor Re:Fantazio will launch on Switch 2 on November 12. The game is the acclaimed role-playing title from October 2024, developed by the lead creators of the Persona series. It originally released on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles.

This news is not just a cheeky headline. Sure, Metaphor is not a brand new game, but it is still remarkable that Sega and Atlus are willing to ship a major title during that month. The November 2026 video game release calendar is almost empty, largely because of one enormous game scheduled for November 19: Grand Theft Auto VI. GTA VI is not even coming to the Switch 2, certainly not on that date, so owners of Nintendo's new system have been looking at very few new releases for that month. The only other notable releases for November across all platforms include a remastered version of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters and a Barbie Rewind compilation, both from Atari.

Nintendo itself did not announce any first-party games for November or December during the Direct. The Metaphor announcement came from Sega and Atlus and was simply featured in Nintendo's presentation. This does not mean Nintendo is dodging the GTA season. The company has been taking its time lately with release date announcements and may hold off on revealing its plans for those months until September. Last year, Nintendo's two big Switch 2 exclusives for November did not get public release dates until August for Kirby Air Riders and September for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Metroid Prime 4, which launched in December 2025, did not get its release date until September 2025 as well.

Other news from today's Direct included a packed September. The already crowded September release calendar will now also include the new Nintendo-published Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave strategy game on September 17. A return to Wii Sports was announced with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a 12-sport compilation slated for October 22. It includes tennis, bowling, boxing, thumb wrestling, and skateboarding, with the last one using the Switch 2's mouse controls. A remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 was shown with a brief non-gameplay clip, but no release date was given beyond 2026. Given Nintendo's spots in September and October, this seems likely for November or December. A new Xenoblade game, an original sequel subtitled Genesis, was announced for next year, alongside upgraded editions of the first three numbered Xenoblade games for July, October, and December.

The Direct also highlighted strong third-party Japanese support. Square Enix announced a 2D-HD retro-styled new Final Fantasy subtitled Resonance for October 22, a new Dragon Quest Monsters game called The Withered World for December, and a surprise trailer for the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts IV, confirming it will ship for Switch 2 alongside other platforms at a later date. From Software showed off The Duskbloods, a Switch 2 exclusive with a closed network test this summer. Capcom announced Dragons Dogma 2, including a new Dark Arisen expansion, for October.

There was also a fair amount of FOMO on display. Nintendo has recently had a habit of releasing games for limited times. During the Direct, the company announced two time-limited experiences: a Mario-themed series of challenges integrated into the Switch 2's Donkey Kong Bananza, running only through September 1, and a series of challenges tied to classic Donkey Kong games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, also only through September 1. Finally, there was more Pokemon news. While no mainline new Pokemon game is slated for late 2026, there will be expansions to this year's hit Pokemon habitat-building game Pokopia. Nintendo announced a three-part expansion beginning its rollout in August, though no price was announced.
