Marathon’s Season 2 Launch And Free Week Is A Hugely Important Test

The live-service shooter Marathon is rolling out its Season 2 update alongside a free-to-play week, and the stakes for the game have never been higher. Developer Bungie is hoping this combination will reverse a steady decline in player numbers and convince lapsed users to give the game another shot. The free access period runs for seven days, giving anyone with a compatible platform a chance to jump in without spending a dime.

Season 2 introduces a new battle pass, fresh maps, and a handful of balance changes aimed at making the core gunplay feel more responsive. The patch notes also promise tweaks to matchmaking and progression systems that players have criticized since launch. For a game that launched to mixed reviews, this update represents a critical moment to prove the studio can listen and adapt.

Industry analysts are watching closely. Marathon launched with strong initial sales but saw its concurrent player count drop by over 60 percent within two months. The free week is designed to capture fence-sitters who were curious but unwilling to pay the full price. If the player numbers spike and hold steady after the free period ends, it could signal a turnaround. If they drop back down, the game may struggle to sustain its live-service model.

Bungie has not said whether it plans to extend the free period or make the game permanently free-to-play. For now, the company is betting that a solid content drop and a no-risk trial will be enough to rebuild trust. The next few weeks will tell if that bet pays off.
