Kiln for PS5 Review: A Beautiful Shell with a Hollow Core

Much like the pottery it's based on, Kiln is a game that has some creativity but is pretty empty on the inside. This PlayStation 5 title attempts to merge the tactile, meditative process of ceramic art with a puzzle-platforming experience, but the result is a work that feels more like a fragile, unfinished sculpture than a fully fired masterpiece.

On the surface, Kiln is undeniably striking. The visual design leans heavily into a minimalist, earthy aesthetic, with environments that shift from raw clay textures to glossy, glazed surfaces. The lighting effects are subtle but effective, casting warm, kiln-like glows across each chamber. The sound design is equally commendable, with the gentle hum of a spinning wheel and the crackle of cooling ceramics providing a soothing auditory backdrop. For the first hour, the game’s atmosphere is genuinely captivating, promising a unique journey of creation and discovery.

However, once the initial novelty wears off, the core gameplay reveals a significant lack of substance. The puzzles, which revolve around shaping clay blocks to create platforms or redirect streams of molten glaze, are repetitive and lack meaningful challenge. Most obstacles can be solved with simple trial and error, and the game rarely introduces new mechanics to keep the player engaged. The narrative, which seems to hint at a deeper story about an artist’s struggle with perfection, is delivered through sparse, cryptic text that fails to connect emotionally. The result is a game that feels like a beautiful, empty vase—pleasing to look at, but with nothing inside to hold your interest. For those seeking a deep, rewarding puzzle experience, Kiln is a disappointing piece that never quite makes it out of the kiln.
